Why have Breast uplift, Mastopexy, Breast Reshaping?
Mastopexy, Breast uplift is carried out to improve the shape and firmness of the breast after weight loss or pregnancy – breast feeding. Breast Uplift is performed to regain a more youthful natural size and shape of the breast and thereby improve self-esteem. Mastopexy is used to reshape the breasts and equalize differently shaped breast to improve symmetry.
If you need or desire an increase in volume, Breast Enhancement with Uplift, commonly a periareolar scar only may be required or a Vertical scar technique.
Before Your Surgery
- Smoking – Essential to stop smoking at least 3 weeks before your Breast Uplift urgery and until wounds are fully healed or at least 2 weeks after.
- Previous surgery – Previous breast surgery or scars may alter the type of operation recommended for your optimum result.
- Mammogram – Recommended if >40 years or family history of Breast Cancer. It is essential to ensure your breast health before under going any breast surgery.
- Drugs – Avoid aspirin/ibuprofen type analgesics for 2 weeks before and after your Breast Uplift surgery.
- - Stop Vit. E one (1) week before your Breast Uplift surgery.
Your Breast Uplift, Mastopexy Surgery
- Scars – Around the nipple only – Periareola, or with scar down to crease under breasts – Vertical Scar, or along crease – Inverted T / Anchor Scar.
- Nipple – Remains attached to breast tissue to preserve sensation and circulation
- Sutures – Dissolving, buried – no sutures to be removed following your Breast Uplift Surgery.
- Drains – If required post operatively; removed before discharge from hospital.
- Dressing – Waterproof Supportive dressings for 14 days and Bra following your Breast Uplift Surgery.
After Your Surgery
- Bra – Non-under-wired support bra, worn day and night for 6 weeks, and then during the day for 6 weeks following your Breast Uplift. (We advise that you purchase x 2 Shock absorber; style – B102, impact level 3. The sizes of these bras will be discussed with you at consultation, and further advice will be given to you by one of our nurses when you book your procedure). - Exercise – Avoid vigorous exercise for 6 weeks. Gentle exercise permitted ( e.g. Swimming ) until 3 months after your Breast Uplift.
- No arm lifting for 3 weeks.
- Showering – Showering ONLY permitted when home and daily thereafter.
- Care of scars – Apply Micropore tape (1 inch) along the scar for 3 months to prevent stretching and accelerate scar softening. Vit. E creams may be used after this period.
Potential Problems/Risks
- Pain – Moderate discomfort expected following your Breast Uplift surgery.
- Bruising – Uncommon, may last for 2 -3 weeks. Avoid Aspirin/Ibuprofen.
- Wound – Occasionally, mild infection. Rarely, serious infection requiring antibiotics ( Risk less than 0.1 %).
- Rarely, haematoma (blood collection – risk less than 0.1%) that may require drainage.
- Sensation – Some diminished sensation is expected around the scar. May affect the nipple following Breast Uplift. Return to normal may take up to 3 months.
- Firmness – Initially breasts are swollen and firm. Uncommonly firm or hard area may appear – indicating fat necrosis following Breast uplift surgery, which may require removal.
- Asymmetry – Uncommon following Breast Uplift surgery, but may require minor adjustment once fully healed.
- Scars – Expected to be thin flat and pale following Breast Uplift surgery. Uncommon may become pink/red and thickened – Hypertrophic scar. Rarely become Keloid.
