Q: Do I need a mammogram before my Breast Uplift, Mastopexy Surgery?

A: Our guidelines are that any woman over the age of 40 should have a mammogram before any breast surgery including Mastopexy, Breast Uplift. Under the age of 40, no screening is necessary if there is not a family history of Breast Cancer or other cancers. A screening mammogram can be arranged for you at the time of your consultation, if required.

Q: Does Breast Uplift require a general anaesthetic or hospitalisation?

A: Breast Uplift, Mastopexy plastic surgery is performed under general anaesthetic, commonly as a day-case or overnight procedure.

Q: How long is the Breast Uplift surgery?

A: Mastopexy, Breast Uplift surgery normally takes approximately 2 to 3 hours to perform depending on your size and shape.

Q: What are my options for the type of Breast Uplift surgery?

A:  Various types of Breast Uplift techniques are available and the optimum procedure for you will depend on your goals and existing size and shape. The significant factors are your initial breast size, degree of drooping and skin elasticity, which determine the technique which is optimum for you in order to achieve the best aesthetic natural result.

Q: What about the scars following Breast Uplift surgery?

A: Unfortunately, it is necessary to have a scar as a result of Breast Uplift, but every effort is made to minimize the scars and ensure that these are as inconspicuous as possible. The goal is to achieve scars which are as short as possible for the safe performance of the surgery, and which, once fully healed are barely visible. The scars are placed around the nipple – periareolar scars, with additional scars down from the nipple to the crease under the breast – Vertical Scar, with or without a scar in the crease – Inverted T Scar. The optimum scars for you will depend on your size, breast shape / drooping, skin elasticity and desired cup size /shape following your Breast Uplift.

If you need or desire an increase in volume, Breast Enhancement with Uplift, commonly a periareolar scar only may be required or a Vertical scar technique.

Q: Will drains be used at the time of Breast Uplift, Mastopexy?

A: The use of drains (thin tubes from each breast) may be necessary depending on the extent of Uplift required. At LBPS, we believe that any blood or fluid in the breast leads to inflammation and scarring with longer healing time. Any drains will be removed before you leave Hospital.

Q: Will I be able to breast feed after Breast Uplift, Mastopexy?

A: With the current techniques used for Breast Uplift surgery most patients retain the ability to breast feed. However, you should be aware that if you have never breastfed, there is a significant chance that you may not be able to breastfeed naturally even before your surgery.

Q: How long is the recovery time following Breast Uplift Surgery?

A: Moderate pain / discomfort are expected for 3 – 5 days. Patients can go back to their normal daily activities after 2 weeks, but avoid strenuous exercise / activity for 6 weeks. It will be necessary to wear a support bra for the first 6 weeks, day and night and the second 6 weeks during the day. The majority of swelling will resolve in 2 – 3 weeks but it will take up to 3 months for the breasts to return to normal feel following breast uplift surgery.

Q: What are the risks of Breast Uplift, Mastopexy?

A: Common to all surgical procedures there are always risks associated with Breast Uplift surgery. However, Breast Uplift is a very safe procedure if performed by a fully qualified and trained Plastic, Cosmetic Surgeon in Hospitals with a high standard of care. The common risks are bleeding inside the breast (less than 0.1%), infection (less than 0.1%) and poor nipple healing / loss (less than 1%), fat necrosis – hardening ( less than 1%). Each of these risks may require revision surgery and at LBPS the cost of any revision surgery will be covered for the first year after your breast uplift surgery. Other risks that may occur are; loss of nipple sensation, poor scars, asymmetry of the breasts.

Q: How long do the results of Breast Uplift Surgery last?

A: The results of Breast Uplift surgery are expected to be long lasting using the current techniques. However, you should be aware that in some circumstances, your breasts may droop further with natural aging or if your weight changes significantly. Drooping can also be exaggerated by smoking – so we strongly advise you to stop smoking if you are considering Breast uplift surgery / Mastopexy.

Q: Can Breast uplift/mastopexy be performed with Breast Implant Surgery?

A: Yes, some women with significant drooping of the breasts together with loss of fullness or volume may require breast augmentation with an implant combined with an uplift/mastopexy. The extent of breast uplift required will depend on the degree of breast drooping and the amount or volume necessary to shape the breast.

Before Your Surgery

• Smoking – Essential to stop smoking at least 3 weeks before your Breast Uplift urgery and until wounds are fully healed or at least 2 weeks after.
• Previous surgery – Previous breast surgery or scars may alter the type of operation recommended for your optimum result.
• Mammogram – Recommended if >40 years or family history of Breast Cancer. It is essential to ensure your breast health before under going any breast surgery.
• Drugs – Avoid aspirin/ibuprofen type analgesics for 2 weeks before and after your Breast Uplift surgery.
• - Stop Vit. E one (1) week before your Breast Uplift surgery.

Your Breast Uplift, Mastopexy Surgery

• Scars – Around the nipple only – Periareola, or with scar down to crease under breasts – Vertical Scar, or along crease – Inverted T / Anchor Scar.
• Nipple – Remains attached to breast tissue to preserve sensation and circulation
• Sutures – Dissolving, buried – no sutures to be removed following your Breast Uplift Surgery.
• Drains – If required post operatively; removed before discharge from hospital.
• Dressing – Waterproof Supportive dressings for 14 days and Bra following your Breast Uplift Surgery.

After Your Surgery

• Bra – Non-under-wired support bra, worn day and night for 6 weeks, and then during the day for 6 weeks following your Breast Uplift. (We advise that you purchase x 2 Shock absorber; style – B102, impact level 3. The sizes of these bras will be discussed with you at consultation, and further advice will be given to you by one of our nurses when you book your procedure). • Exercise – Avoid vigorous exercise for 6 weeks. Gentle exercise permitted ( e.g. Swimming ) until 3 months after your Breast Uplift.
• No arm lifting for 3 weeks.
• Showering – Showering ONLY permitted when home and daily thereafter.
• Care of scars – Apply Micropore tape (1 inch) along the scar for 3 months to prevent stretching and accelerate scar softening. Vit. E creams may be used after this period.

Potential Problems/Risks

• Pain – Moderate discomfort expected following your Breast Uplift surgery.
• Bruising – Uncommon, may last for 2 -3 weeks. Avoid Aspirin/Ibuprofen.
• Wound – Occasionally, mild infection. Rarely, serious infection requiring antibiotics ( Risk less than 0.1 %).
• Rarely, haematoma (blood collection – risk less than 0.1%) that may require drainage.
• Sensation – Some diminished sensation is expected around the scar. May affect the nipple following Breast Uplift. Return to normal may take up to 3 months.
• Firmness – Initially breasts are swollen and firm. Uncommonly firm or hard area may appear – indicating fat necrosis following Breast uplift surgery, which may require removal.
• Asymmetry – Uncommon following Breast Uplift surgery, but may require minor adjustment once fully healed.
• Scars – Expected to be thin flat and pale following Breast Uplift surgery. Uncommon may become pink/red and thickened – Hypertrophic scar. Rarely become Keloid.
