Q: How long is the recovery time following eyelid plastic surgery?
A: Patients can go back to their normal activities after 7 – 10 days. Avoid bending over for first 5 days, sleep with extra pillows for first week. The eyes may be uncomfortable for the first week. Eye drops or ointment may be prescribed for the first week. Full recovery can take 6 weeks.

Q: What about the scars following Blepharoplasty Plastic Surgery?
A: Scars in the upper eyelid are placed in the natural crease approximately 8 mm above eyelash margin. The scar in the lower lid is placed just below the eyelash margin and commonly extends out into the crow’s feet lines. These scar are expected to heal well and become inconspicuous after 6 week to 3 months. Uncommonly, hypertrophic scars develop in the upper eyelid which may require treatment.

A: The results are first and foremost natural. The goals of Blepharoplasty surgery are to restore an aesthetically pleasing eye appearance which is in balance with your facial features – i.e. looks natural and does not appear abnormal. The eyes should look fresh, youthful and foremost natural. Remember that it can take up to 3 months before the final appearance of the eyes is achieved.

Q: What are the risks of Blepharoplasty, Eye bag plastic surgery?
A: Common to all surgical procedures there are always risks associated with surgery. However, complications are uncommon. Mild discomfort is expected for the first 3 – 5 days. Any severe pain must be reported to your surgeon without delay. Bruising is common and may take 2 weeks to resolve, while major bleeding is rare. Infection is infrequent (less than 0.5%) and will require a course of appropriate antibiotics. Hypertropic or keloid scarring is also rare but will require specific treatments to reduce the scarring. Excessive bruising or bleeding is rare (less than 1: 100 000) and can damage eyesight. This will need urgent treatment. Drooping of the lower eyelid may occur and commonly resolves with conservative treatment after 2 – 3 weeks. Mild visual disturbance is common due to post operative swelling which resolves quickly. Very rarely, double vision is permanent due to scarring of the muscles around the eye. Assessment by an Eye Specialist will be required.

Q: Can Blepharoplasty, Eye bag Surgery be performed at the same time as other procedures?
A: Yes, Blepharoplasty is commonly combined with other face surgery; most commonly, Browlift, Browpexy and Facelift. Other procedures which are commonly combined with Eyelid surgery include, Rhinoplasty, Cheek lift, or Necklift. It is important to discuss all of your concerns at the time of your consultation to ensure that the appropriate procedures are discussed and a plan is arranged which is in your best interest.

Q: How long do the results of Eyelid Surgery last?
A: The results of Blepharoplasty, Eye bag Surgery will last from 5 – 10 years depending on your particular anatomy and aging.

Q: Is there an alternative to a traditional Blepharoplasty, Eye bag surgery?
A: Non surgical treatments can be used to improve the tired appearance or dark circles in the lower eyelids. Obagi Elastiderm is commonly recommended to improve the texture and tone of the skin. Dermal fillers (injectable) can rejuvenate the lower eyelids avoiding surgery in this area. Some patients have a relative excess of skin in the upper eyelids which is caused by eyebrow drooping (ptosis) which should be corrected either by a browlift or browpexy instead of excising the upper eyelid skin.
